How does laser hair removal work?
Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses an intense, pulsating beam of light to target the melanin in the hair so the darker the hair the better the results. During laser hair removal, a laser beam passes through the skin to an individual hair follicle. The intense heat of the laser damages the hair follicle, which inhibits future hair growth. The most effective treatments occur when the hair is in it's active growth so is important to follow the treatment schedule that is provided to you.
How many treatments will I need?
Laser hair removal is effective while hair is in a growth phase. About 20 percent of hair in any given area will be in a growth phase, so generally a minimum of 6-8 treatments is needed depending on the body area. Treatments should also be scheduled 4-6 weeks apart to be consistent with the hair natural growth phase.
Are the results permanent?
Results vary depending on skin and hair type. Although laser hair removal effectively slows hair growth, it doesn't guarantee permanent hair removal. It typically takes multiple laser hair removal treatments to provide an extended hair-free period. Periodic maintenance treatments might be needed as well.
What does it feel like?
There is some discomfort with the treatment. Patients describe it as the snap of a rubber band. Cold compresses or anesthetic creams can reduce discomfort and some lasers have cooling devices such as cold air that also helps with making the treatments more comfortable. Laser hair removal has come a long way and the treatments are usually quick enough where the discomfort is not much of a problem.
